S3 Storage Classes In AWS
Amazon S3 offers multiple storage classes to help you optimize cost and performance based on your data access patterns and requirements. Each storage class is designed for a specific use case, such as frequently accessed data, infrequently accessed data, or archival storage.
Main S3 Storage Classes
S3 Standard
Designed for frequently accessed data. It offers low latency and high throughput.
Use case: Hosting website images, active application data.S3 Intelligent-Tiering
Automatically moves data between two access tiers (frequent and infrequent) based on changing access patterns, optimizing costs without performance impact.
Use case: Data with unpredictable or changing access patterns.S3 Standard-IA (Infrequent Access)
For data that is accessed less frequently but requires rapid access when needed. Lower storage cost, but higher retrieval cost compared to S3 Standard.
Use case: Backups, disaster recovery files.S3 One Zone-IA
Similar to Standard-IA, but data is stored in a single Availability Zone. Lower cost, but less resilience.
Use case: Re-creatable data, secondary backups.S3 Glacier
For long-term archival. Retrieval times range from minutes to hours.
Use case: Compliance archives, digital preservation.S3 Glacier Deep Archive
Lowest-cost storage for data that is rarely accessed and can tolerate retrieval times of up to 12 hours.
Use case: Long-term backups, regulatory archives.
Example Scenario
Suppose you are managing a company’s data with the following requirements:
- Active project files need to be accessed daily.
- Monthly reports are accessed only a few times a year.
- Historical records must be retained for compliance but are rarely accessed.
How you would use S3 storage classes:
- Store active project files in S3 Standard for fast access.
- Store monthly reports in S3 Standard-IA to save on storage costs, since they are infrequently accessed.
- Store historical records in S3 Glacier Deep Archive for the lowest cost, as they are rarely needed but must be retained.
Example: Assigning Storage Classes Using AWS CLI
# Upload a file to S3 Standard (default)
aws s3 cp project.docx s3://my-bucket/project.docx
# Upload a file to S3 Standard-IA
aws s3 cp report.pdf s3://my-bucket/report.pdf --storage-class STANDARD_IA
# Upload a file to S3 Glacier Deep Archive
aws s3 cp archive.zip s3://my-bucket/archive.zip --storage-class DEEP_ARCHIVE
Benefits
- Cost Optimization: Choose the right storage class to balance cost and access needs.
- Flexibility: Easily transition objects between storage classes using S3 Lifecycle policies.
- Durability: All storage classes provide high durability (99.999999999%).
