EBS Snapshot In AWS
What is an EBS Snapshot?
An EBS Snapshot is a point-in-time backup of your EBS volume. When you create a snapshot, AWS takes a copy of your volume's data and stores it in Amazon S3. However, you don't interact directly with S3; you manage snapshots through the EBS console or API.
Key Characteristics:
- Incremental Backups: Snapshots are incremental. This means that after the first full snapshot, subsequent snapshots only save the blocks of data that have changed since the last snapshot. This makes them very efficient in terms of storage space and cost.
- Stored in S3: Although they are EBS features, the underlying storage for snapshots is Amazon S3, which provides high durability and availability.
- Region-Specific: Snapshots are stored within the region where the EBS volume resides. You can copy snapshots to other regions for disaster recovery or multi-region deployments.
- Volume Restoration: You can restore an EBS volume from a snapshot. This creates a new EBS volume that is an exact replica of the original volume at the time the snapshot was taken.
- AMI Creation: Snapshots are a fundamental component when creating Amazon Machine Images (AMIs). An AMI essentially bundles one or more EBS snapshots (for the root and data volumes) along with launch permissions and block device mappings.
Use Cases for EBS Snapshots:
- Data Backup and Recovery: The primary use case is backing up critical data on your EBS volumes. In case of data corruption, accidental deletion, or instance failure, you can restore your data from a snapshot.
- Disaster Recovery: Copying snapshots to different AWS regions allows you to recover your applications and data in another region if a disaster affects your primary region.
- Data Migration: You can use snapshots to migrate data between different Availability Zones or even different AWS accounts.
- Creating New Volumes: Quickly provision new EBS volumes with pre-populated data (e.g., a standard database setup) by restoring from a snapshot.
- Auditing and Compliance: Snapshots provide a historical record of your data, which can be useful for auditing and compliance requirements.
Steps to Create an EBS Snapshot
Using AWS Management Console
Log in to AWS Management Console
Navigate to the EC2 Dashboard.Select ‘Volumes’
From the left‑hand menu, under Elastic Block Store, click on Volumes.Choose the Target EBS Volume
Select the volume you want to back up via snapshot.Initiate Snapshot Creation
- Click Actions → Create snapshot.
Enter Snapshot Details
- Description: Provide meaningful details (e.g., “Snapshot of WebApp DB Volume – Aug 2025”).
- Tags: (Optional) Add tags for cost tracking or identification.
Create Snapshot
- Click Create snapshot.
- The snapshot creation process starts (initial state:
pending). - When complete, status will turn to
completed.
Using Automation (e.g., AWS Backup or Lifecycle Manager)
- You can automate snapshot creation using:
- EBS Snapshot Lifecycle Manager (SLM) – schedule daily/weekly snapshots and retention policies.
- AWS Backup – centralized backup strategy across services.
Best Practices
- Use tags (e.g.,
Environment=Prod, Backup=Daily). - Automate for critical workloads using SLM.
- Copy snapshots to other regions for disaster recovery.
- Encrypt snapshots if dealing with sensitive data.
